How to get Brick-style friction on Android without the hardware

What makes physical-friction blocking work
Every hardware focus device is selling one idea, and it is not the electronics. It is that the thing which unlocks your phone is somewhere else, so unlocking costs a walk.
That works because the urge to check a feed is intense and brief. It survives a tap. It does not usually survive standing up, crossing a room, and coming back. By the time you would arrive, the reason has evaporated — which is the entire mechanism, and it has nothing to do with what the trigger is made of.
Once you see that, the question stops being “which device” and becomes “where do I put the trigger”.
How to recreate it in software
A QR code you place
Save or print a reusable unlock code and put it in another room. Free, works on any phone with a camera, and the walk is as long as you decide to make it.
An NFC tag you tap
The closest analogue to the hardware experience. Enrol a cheap tag, stick it somewhere out of the way, tap to unlock. No camera, works in the dark.
A charging cable
Access only while plugged in, which anchors the phone to one spot instead of following you around the house.
On all three, a cooldown runs before the unlock is accepted. That covers the case the hardware version does not: being next to the trigger and reaching for it out of habit.
What you give up, and what you gain
Structurally, the trade is narrow and it goes both ways.
Hardware is stronger on tamper-resistance
A physical device cannot be uninstalled. Software has to defend itself with Device Admin and a PIN, and on stock Android a determined user can still disable an accessibility service. That gap is real and worth naming.
Software is stronger on granularity
You block chosen apps rather than switching modes wholesale, so the phone stays useful for the things it is genuinely for.
Software has nothing to lose or forget
A printed code can be reprinted. A tag can be re-enrolled. Losing the object is an inconvenience rather than a purchase.
Software adds the enforced wait
A cooldown you cannot skip, plus a daily cap on unlock sessions, which a physical trigger on its own does not give you.
Setup walkthrough
- 1. Install MassBlocker and grant the Accessibility permission, which is what lets it see that a blocked app just opened.

Questions
Is an app as effective as hardware?
For the part that does the work — having to physically go somewhere to unlock — yes, because the friction comes from where you put the trigger, not from what it is made of. Where hardware is stronger is that it cannot be uninstalled. An app closes most of that gap with uninstall protection and a PIN, but on stock Android a determined user can still disable the service.
What if I lose the tag?
Keep a printed QR code somewhere safe as the fallback, and set a PIN in strict mode. Between the two you always have a way back in that is deliberate rather than instant.
Can I use both?
Nothing stops you keeping a hardware device and running app-level blocking alongside it. Most people find they only need one, and the one they keep is whichever is nearest to the room they actually work in.
Do I need to buy anything?
No. The QR unlock is free and a printed sheet of paper is enough. NFC tags cost a few rupees each if you would rather tap than scan, and they are optional.
