How to block apps on Android so you can't just uninstall the blocker

Why normal blockers fail

A blocker is only as strong as its weakest exit, and most have two of them.

The first is the snooze button. You set a limit, the limit is reached, and the app offers you fifteen more minutes. The decision to stop is handed back to the person who already decided they wanted to keep going, at the exact moment they are least able to say no.

The second is the uninstall. Even a blocker with no snooze can be long-pressed off the home screen in about four seconds. Nothing about the block survives that. This is the loophole that matters, because it defeats every other feature at once.

Worth being straight about: no app can make a phone truly tamper-proof. What you can do is make quitting cost more than the scroll is worth.

What Device Admin uninstall protection is

Android has a long-standing API called Device Admin, originally built so that workplaces could enforce policy on company phones. One of the things a Device Admin app can do is refuse its own removal until it is deactivated.

Applied to a blocker, that means the uninstall path runs through the app’s own gate. Deactivating Device Admin asks for the PIN. Without the PIN there is no quick uninstall, and the four-second exit is gone.

Android allows this because you grant it explicitly, in a system dialog, and you can see it listed under device admin apps in Settings at any time. It is a permission you gave on purpose, not something the app took.

Setting a PIN someone else holds

Strict mode is the part that makes the PIN meaningful. It adds a PIN in front of the settings that would weaken the block: changing the blocklist, shortening the cooldown, turning off the service, removing the app.

If you set the PIN and remember it, you have built a lock you carry the key to. That is enough for a lot of people. If it is not enough for you, hand the PIN to someone else — a partner, a flatmate, a parent — and the block stops being a negotiation you can have with yourself at 1am.

The cooldown: why a delay you can't skip beats willpower

The urge to open a blocked app is sharp and short. It rarely survives contact with a few minutes of nothing happening.

A cooldown exploits that. When you ask for access, the app does not refuse you — it just does not open yet. There is no button to press to make it faster, so there is nothing to argue with. By the time the window opens, the reason you wanted it has usually gone.

This is why the combination matters more than any single feature. The cooldown handles the impulse, the physical unlock handles the convenience, and uninstall protection stops you routing around both.

Setting it up

  1. 1. Install MassBlocker and grant the Accessibility permission. This is the one that does the actual blocking — without it the app cannot tell which app you just opened.
  2. 2. Pick your blocklist. Start with the two or three apps you actually lose hours to, not everything on the phone.
  3. 3. Place your unlock. Save or print the QR and put it somewhere you have to walk to. That distance is the feature.
  4. 4. Turn on strict mode and set a PIN, then enable uninstall protection when prompted for Device Admin.
  5. 5. Decide who holds the PIN. You, if you trust yourself. Someone else, if you have evidence you shouldn’t.

Can I remove it if I forget the PIN?

Yes, but not in one tap. Uninstall protection is tied to Device Admin, and turning that off asks for the PIN. If the PIN is genuinely gone, a factory reset clears it — which is deliberately more effort than a moment of boredom is worth.

Does it work without root?

Yes. Everything here uses standard Android APIs — the Accessibility service to see which app came to the foreground, and Device Admin for uninstall protection. No root, no custom ROM, no ADB commands.

Is accessibility access safe?

The permission is broad by design, so what matters is what the app does with it. MassBlocker reads only the package name of the app in the foreground, so it knows whether to block it. It does not read screen content, capture what you type, or send accessibility data anywhere — it stays on the device.

What stops me uninstalling it during the cooldown?
